Week 12

Kate's Physical Computing Journal

Some Thoughts on the 12th week of Physical Computing....

Starting to think about what to do for the final. I would like to make something useful but also emotionally satisfying. Maybe the goal would be to immerse someone in an envronment. It would be nice to make someone feel like they were someplace else. I don't want an entire virtual experience but maybe something that uses sounds and lights and just evokes a feeling. I'm interested in working with water but of course don't know much about doing that. It may be too much for the final project.

I'm impressed with what other people are coming up with. It's nice to see more people in the labs working. Where did they all come from?

Technology Reading--

I researched wearable computing and communities this week. A man named Gerd Kortuem is looking at finding ways to make wireless wearables that can find information about the people around you and use it for various means. He started thinking about this because he used the frequency of MP3 downloads to pick music to listen to and found that he was either revisiting music he had once loved or finding new music to listen to that he never would have heard had he not done this.

His idea is that you might be walking by someone who lives near you and could give you a ride home, or someone who has something that he no longer needs and you need it. What he wants is a device that could link together link minded people and become a source for taking advantage of population.

I think this is very interesting. It is like creating communities where there would never have been a community. It goes beyond the surface of our everyday experience. It would be nice to be walking down the street in New York and find out that the person behind me was from the same place I was from. It could lead to a lot of interesting experiences. The only problem I see with it is that it may not be very safe. You are dealing with large groups of strangers and do you really want them all to have so much information about you?

Things I Learned

I didn't do this lab assignent because I didn't have time to get all the supplies needed. It is going to have to wait until Christmas break.

You can control devices serially from a computer through the bx-24.
